Each spring, members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor the Congressional Art Competition to recognize the artistic talents of students in North Carolina’s 8thdistrict and throughout the nation. The winners are selected by an Arts Advisory Committee made up of artists from the district. The winners are announced at a reception by Congressman Richard Hudson. The winner will have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C.  (Hudson.house.gov). The work will also be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.

Congratulations to Jayden Harper, a senior at Westover High School and Deanna Glus, a junior at Massey High Classical High both students won first place in their district.

The annual High School Juried Art Show offered Cumberland County Schools’ high school Visual Arts students the opportunity to have their artwork adjudicated by a Guest Juror for possible selection in the art show.  The Art Show was on display from March 7-16, 2018.  Students competed for First place, Second place, Third place or an Honorable Mention in the categories of Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media/Other.

Student awards were presented at the Opening Reception on March 6. Mr. Joseph Begnaud served as the 2018 Juror. Mr. Begnaud is an Associate Professor of Art at UNC Pembroke.  This student Visual Arts event was made possible through the kind assistance of the staff of the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County.  For more information, please contact Lydia Stewart, Arts Education Supervisor for Cumberland County Schools at (910) 678-2622.
